Sydney Says Yes To Opening Some Of It’s Beaches
But Bondi is not on that list.
It’s been over a month since Sydney beaches were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but in the Good News department, that’s starting to change. Coogee, Maroubra and Clovelly beaches are now open to residents.
“I need to stress that our beaches are not open to general use and can only be accessed for exercise. Activities such as sitting on the sand, sun-baking or gathering in groups will not be permitted and council staff and police will be enforcing these restrictions,” Randwick mayor Danny Said said in a statement
“I urge everybody to do the right thing and practice social distancing while exercising so that we can maintain access for exercise purposes and get through this difficult period together.”
Surfing, swimming and exercising on the beaches is now allowed in the above mentioned areas, but you can forget about throwing a beach party. Social distancing guidelines will still be enforced and groups of more than two are prohibited (unless it’s a family). Failure to comply can result in fines up to $1,000.
Nearby, Waverley, home of Bondi Beach, and Woollahra have opted to continue to keep their beaches shut for the time being.
In the last 24 hours, New South Wales has reported only 26 new cases of the virus and one death. The decline in coronavirus cases has allowed local officials to relax some of the regulations that have been put in place, but clearly we’re still a long way from everything being back to normal.
