o2 SURFTOWN MUC Has Entered The Chat

Meet Germany’s first wave pool — and the world’s first with Endless Surf technology.

You’d be forgiven for not realizing Munich, Germany already has a thriving surf scene.

Geographically speaking, the city is about as far away from consistently fun (ocean) surf as Albuquerque in the US or Alice Springs in Australia.

It’s a 14-hour drive from Munich to ze Atlantique in Hossegor — though closer, but generally worse, options exist in the North Sea (700 km away) or the Mediterranean (500 km away).

Over the years, Munich’s surfers discovered a workaround: river waves. The city is loaded with ’em. The Eisbach is the most iconic and has a crew on it at all times. Munich has thus become Germany’s de facto surf capital.

Fittingly, it just got the nation’s first proper wave pool.

o2 SURFTOWN MUC is the world’s first tank featuring Endless Surf technology, and it’s the biggest in Europe.

The air section is big news for Euros looking to give their air game a lift. The barrel setting will keep the instincts sharp for Munich core dogs between coastal stints. And the range of more basic settings will delight surfers from near and far. The combination of wave size, speed, and steepness they’ve cultivated is incredible. It feels like an ocean wave — just, an ocean wave that has somehow faced the riddles of swell, wind, tide, and bathymetry and emerged without defect.

It opens this summer.

If you’re reading this from afar, o2 SURFTOWN MUC is right next to Munich’s international airport — which is among the busiest in Europe and services more than 35 million passengers a year. Oktoberfest (yes, that’s in Munich) will be from Sep 21 – Oct 6 this year. In other words, it coincides with the Euro surf prime time. Traveling to your beachbreak tubes via chlorine tubes and liters of beer in Munich would be a power move* that would command respect from your friends, family, peers, subordinates, superiors, enemies, lovers, and diplomats from foreign lands.

*We recommend attending Oktoberfest after you’ve already surfed.
