Stab Podcast: Would You Call Mick Fanning Off A Wave At Snapper?
Format changes, non-vaccinated surfers, and the CT’s return to Barra de la Cruz.
The process of sifting through information and only reporting only the surfing-related details feels dirty.
Are we bad people for doing this 24/7? Probably, but at least we picked an entertaining subject. I can only imagine the lifelessness of an hour-long cycling podcast.
Before you guys break off into a vax vs. non-vax tirade in the comments, let’s touch on some things outside the realm of syringes:
Celebrity Surf Club
We act like we hate it, but surfing celebrities tickles us all in some special way. This week’s spotlight shines on the actor, director, and producer Jonah Hill, and his “Body Love” tattoo.
Body Glove would be silly not to offer Uncle Joey a contract of some sort.
Surf Sins
We’ve all committed surf heresy, but only a couple are brave enough to own up to their mistakes. Even fewer sinners hop on a Stab Podcast and share them with the world.
This week we get the backstory from someone who unknowingly called Mick Fanning off a wave at Snapper. Buck’s recommended recourse for the legally blind fellow is a vision quest, but I believe fleeing the country and shaving his head would be more effective.
WSL Announcements
John Florence pulls out of remaining CT events.
John Florence is done competing for good… reasons this year. Following up with last week’s uncertainty, John has announced that he is out for Mexico, our for Tahiti, and ready for pipe, which will kick off next year’s CT.
The WSL has also reinstated the mid-year cutoff, in which the 36-men and 18-women fields are reduced to 24-men and 12-women fields at the end of the first five events in May. Our CUSP co-host Mikey C finds it “pretty cool” that those struggling to requalify will have a legitimate crack at the Challenger Series, but the opinions of others may vary.
Issues for surfers without the Covid Vaccine.
Tahiti requires a 10-day quarantine for non-vaccinated surfers, and there are only five days between the last day of the Mexico event and the first day of the Tahiti comp. That math is not ideal for some, which we found out yesterday. It really makes you wonder what the future entails for a handful of tour surfers…
