Stab Podcast: “There Is A Shit Load Of Hero Worship In The Surfing Community”
Jed Smith analyzes the bizarre social matrix inside of a surf town.
On this week’s episode of the Drop, Danny Johnson exchanges words with veteran Stab contributor Jed Smith. Jed recently launched two compelling articles on the site, one which puts surfing on a pedestal and another that tears it down. Let’s start with the ugly:
Jed wrote a piece highlighting the unhealthy social hierarchy in ‘Surf Towns’ which was uncomfortably accurate. He touched on the false sense of entitlement skilled surfers can develop and how a smooth cutback directly contributes nothing to one’s character.
Your talent on a surfboard is a useless measure, and is significantly less meaningful than being a good parent, friend, and functioning member of society.
Luckily, with the help of Brad Gerlach, Jed also cranked out a guide that provides us with some tips to get more joy out of our surf session. Even when life gives you onshore closeouts, there is still a way to make lemonade.
