‘Saturn’ Orbits Into Southern California

Quiksilver’s newest film made landfall in Encinitas, and we were there to document the occasion.

Unless you spent the last week on an off-grid Thanksgiving retreat to the woods, you’ve probably heard that Quiksilver is touring their new film ‘Saturn’ — and that it’s available exclusively on Stab Premium.

Even though we’ve watched it about 50 times, we’re not quite tired of the film — which features Kael Walsh, Rolando Montes, and Al Cleland Jr. It genuinely feels like Quiksilver is putting their content where their mouth is, and shifting their focus back to the retro roots of surfing. Paired with the revival of the red box logo on Griffin Colapinto’s sleds, ‘Saturn’ is a terrific indicator of Quiksilver’s potential return to the helm of surf culture.

Last night, Quik brought their van and VHS player (probably) to La Paloma theater in Encinitas for a display of their latest curation.

With a variety of youngsters, surf dads, and shredders in attendance, the pre-film atmosphere simmered with anticipation. A low hum of chatter and greetings swung through the crowd of excited taste-testers, while those who’d already seen the film shared whispers of remembered blowtails.

The doors swung open, ushering the crowd forth, and seats were found. After a brief foreword, the lights fell away and an orchestra of cracking beverages hissed in the silence.

Wedge-slab chaos ensued.

Following the film, the crowd poured from the theater hall into the street, dispersing into various Mexican restaurants and cars, with West Australian visions still imprinted in their memory.

If you’d like to get your own big-screen peek at the film, Quiksilver’s final premiere is tonight at The Wayfarer in Costa Mesa.

Don’t blow it!
