#PipelineAndChill: Pipe and Backdoor turn the lights on
All photos by Laserwolf “A Great opening weekend at Pipe,” says North Shore-based photographer, Laserwolf. “Friday wasn’t perfect by any means, but guys were finding pretty incredible waves and things got better with each set throughout the day. Today showed pretty good form with a lot of great barrels. The boys were PSYCHING! “Jaimie O’Brien is such a frother for Pipe barrels, he was boogie boarding the day before when it was big and hollow but super wonky and unfortunately he ended up rolling his ankle, so he wasn’t able to surf when things got good. I don’t think he’s too stressed though. He surfs Pipe better and more often then anyone so he’ll be back in no time getting the waves of the winter. “Apparently while I was on lunch break, 15-year-old local grom Barron Mamiya got a psycho one. Legit guys are claiming it could be wave of the winter. I haven’t seen the clip yet though. Plus, it’s only the first swell. I heard Landon McNamara and Uncle Mike Ho both got some pretty nuts ones from second reef as well. “No sign of Double J Single F. My guess is, he’s stocked up on amazing Pipe clips and is off scoring last minute magic for his new flick View From A Blue Moon.” “Peruvian Alvaro Malpartida was a standout,” says Laserwolf. “I never heard of him before this weekend but he was packing some serious barrels. Super nice guy, too.” “Anthony Walsh was a standout as usual and it was great to see him back after being out on injury last winter. Pipe missed him. He missed pipe. We all missed his GoPro clips.” “Some legit guys are claiming 15 year old local grom Barron Mamiya got what could be wave of the winter (obviously, this isn’t it),” says Laserwolf. “Regardless, he was the most impressive out of the under 20 crew this swell. Expect big things to come for the young Hawaiian.” “Bruce is back, and looking tack sharp,” says Laserwolf. Cristobal De Col, early on the scene. The fabulous Danny Fuller, being fabulous. Eli Olson always kills at Backdoor. “Gavin Beschen was bleeding style as usual,” says Laserwolf. “I swear, the ocean talks to him (Gav),” says Laserwolf. “He always seems to be in be in the right place at the right time. Good Karma Barrels.” Lifeguard Kaiwi Berry. Koa Rothman, very casual, unsurprisingly. Mark Healey, always in the zone. This time, channelling some Hobgood double-hand drag. Micah Moniz, maximum stylez. Mikey O’Shaughnessy. Nick Rozsa isn’t just finners in Ventura. See? Big winter en route for Mr Rozsa. Seth Moniz, very thrilled. As is the shooter. Skip McCullough “Wardo got a really good one at Backdoor tonight after the sunset,” says Laserwolf. “I completely wrote him off but he flew out of the last section and hit one off the top.”
