Perfect Scores Are Raining At The 2019 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout
Who is Keito Matsuoka, and how does he keep owning Pipe?
The 2019 Da Hui Backdoor Shootout it’s on its second day of surfing competition, and much like on Day 1, Pipeline is belting the reef like an aggrieved stepfather.
Some highlights from Day 1 include Tyler Newton’s Second Reef Stoinker and Balaram Stack’s hour-long send fest.
Than today, Japan’s Keito Matsuoka scored a perfect 12-point ride (Da Hui allows its scale to hit 12 points rather than the typical 10) for this hair-drop to robust Pipe cylinder.
You might remember Keito from last year’s Backdoor Shootout, when he scored an eerily similar Pipe wave for a clean 11-pointer.
While we can’t claim to fully understand the Shootout’s competition format, we do know that individual brands send out teams of four surfers to catch as many great waves as they can within a specified time limit. Each brand gets several opportunities in the water, after which both individual and team winners are selected.
Last year Jamie O’Brien took home the individual trophy and Team Da Hui Wax stole the group title.
Tune in above to catch the remaining hours of tube mastery, and maybe see the Backdoor Shootout winners crowned.
