Watch: ‘Scorched’ starring Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino and Noa Deane
Starring Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino and Noa Deane.
Late last year, a boat named the Kaimana Royale was chartered in the Mentawais. The invitee list included Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino and Noa Deane. The plan? Well, essentially, little more than a return to surfing’s classic values: An Indo boat trip with three pro surfers.
Kolohe ‘Brother’ Andino carries the burden of expectation on his shoulders like it were an honour. A pro surfer father, a young discovery and all the hopes of Californian surfing have made this young man mature beyond his time. Could his cheeky, freesurfer travel pals pry out the golden sense of humour hidden within this competitive beast?
Noa Deane’s life is a parody. He loathes seriousness and, for the entirety of the boat trip, adopted the persona of the kind of middle-aged man you might find at the Sands Hotel in Noa’s native Coolangatta. Despite his best intentions, Noa accidentally lets profound thoughts slip through on occasion. He does a far worse job of hiding his raw surfing talent.
Dane Reynolds was, for a time, the greatest surfer in the world. His influence changed the shapes people rode, the way they decorated their boards, they things they wore. Through his online edits, Dane continues to thrill and inspire generations after him. He’s recently become a father, and as the oldest on the trip, became the trip’s animal spirit by default. His surfing was as exciting as ever.
You might’ve already seen Thank You, Andy, a short film that used clips shot during the Scorched boat trip. But, the trip as a whole was as much about the future as it was the past. And the place where the two meet is… intoxicating. Welcome to Scorched.
