This event is a career decider for some, the final window of opportunity to qualify and join the players on the dream circuit. Today, not only did competitors have to think about rankings and sticking their tricks at the Haleiwa Hawaiian Pro, they had to dodge rogue bombs and fight shifting conditions to stay in the sweet spot. California’s Brett Simpson and Portugal’s Frederico Morais shone bright, both securing rides in the nine point range and progressing to round three.
The forecast is looking a little smaller tomorrow, which will allow for a little more performance and expression – just in time for the big movers and shakers like John Florence, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith et al, to take the spotlight.
