“I’ve played a couple of individual tournaments and I just choked,” says Kelly Slater of his golfing… er, ‘career’. Turns out, howevs, that 11 big, silver cups might not be enough for the Champ’s trophy room. In an interview with Fox Sports Kelly revealed that, once he’s done being ASP’s biggest drawcard, he has an interest in joining the US Golf Champs. Maybe.
During the Quik Pro, Gold Coast, Kelly joined The Golf Show‘s host, Brett Ogle, for nine-holes. The pair discussed Kell’s experiences at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Alfred Dunhill Links, where last year he partnered eventual winner, Englishman Simon Dyson. Writes Fox Sports: “It was Slater’s form across the nine holes – where he started par, birdie, birdie, and had six one-putt greens – that prompted Ogle to ask the surfing icon about the possibility of playing professional golf.”
Kell, 40, says he’s thought about joining the Champs Tour when he turns 50. “It’s a different level,” he says. “They’re much better than I am. You have to take so much time to tune in all those little tiny things and you’ve got to be comfortable in the competitive arena.”
If you owned every record in the ASP book and were a five-handicapper, what’d stop you changing tact at 40 and chasing another lifelong dream? Probably not a lot.
