John John Florence has been the sun our world orbits these past few weeks. The past few decades, if we’re being honest — but even more so lately. Will he or won’t he?
Less than a week ago, after months of cryptic breadcrumbs and swirling rumours, he made it official: in 2025, John’s stepping away from the tour.
“I’ve decided to focus on surfing in a different way this year,” John wrote on Instagram. “I want to create the time to explore, find new waves, and draw different lines.”
Many assumed John would bow out after the Lexus Pipe Pro — a pet event for him, a natural place to call it quits. But the timing of his exit mattered; it shaped who got his spot on tour. Quit before Pipe, and Al Cleland Jr. stepped in, kicking off his rookie season. Surf Pipe, then walk away, and the WSL took the reins, dealing out event-specific wildcards.
John chose the first option. A clean exit. A tip of the hat to Al.
Today, though, John accepted the local event wildcard into the Lexus Pipe Pro. He’ll be surfing after all, and Al steps into his rookie season on tour. Every so often, the cards fall right.
It’s worth noting this is the first time John’s taken a self-imposed break since joining the tour — his previous absences were dictated by a busted knee, spent mostly in rehab. This time, he walks out the front door. No limp. No leash.
At least we have him at Pipe.
