Jack Robinson Will Surf A Death-Heat To Earn His Spot In The Margaret River Pro
After Caio Ibelli pulled out of the event with a broken foot, trialists Jack Robinson and Jerome Forrest have been slated to surf a 25-minute heat to take his spot, first thing this morning.
I must admit, I was slightly disappointed to hear that Kael Walsh and Dave Delroy Carr had advanced through the Margaret River Pro trials. It’s not that I have nothing against those two (as surfers or humans) but the fact that WA’s greatest talent since Taj, Mr. Jack Jack Robinson, failed to make the main event again was deflating.
Especially with a solid forecast on tap.
Alas, due to an ill-fated air attempt by my Brazilian doppelgänger Caio Ibelli (see below), resulting in some busted piggies, another slot has opened up in the main event. As announced by the WSL, this spot will be decided by a two-man Death Heat, featuring Jack Robinson and fellow local Jerome Forrest, just before the main event.
Which, to remind you, will probably run at pumping North Point.
I don’t know about you guys, but in my mind this is vvvvvery exciting news. Jack has never before qualified to compete at his home event, and given the forecast and his otherworldly abilities, I think he’s liable to take the whole thing out. Keep in mind that even if the event moves back to Main Break, Jack has no problem mixing it up on the rail, as proven by his win at the Sunset Open back in 2017. I just hope they open him up on the Fantasy sites before it’s too late.
And, sorry! I just realized I’ve been assuming that Jack will beat this Jerome fella, who actually surfs quite well (see below). It’s not that I that I think Jerome is a non-threat, I just want Jack to win so badly that I’m going to act like it’s the only possible outcome. That’s what all the self-help books say to do.
Anyways, the event will (likely) kick off at 8 am in West Oz or 5 pm PDT. Be there!
