Italo Ferreira Sparks Surfing’s First Viral Challenge

It involves aggressive board-waxing and we encourage everyone to try.

The Cinnamon Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge. The Harlem Shake. Consuming actual Tide Pods.

These are just a few of the many viral internet challenges that have swept social media in recent years. Some of them, like the Ice Bucket Challenge (which was used to bring awareness to ALS), were created for positive reasons. Others, like the Tide Pod Challenge, were created for Darwinian purposes. Most of them are just stupid and somewhat funny.

But as far as our recollection goes, there has never been a viral challenge centered around surf.

Until now.

A few days back, the Brazilian with a Bell-ringing Koala on his arm, Italo Ferreira, posted a clip of himself waxing a bikini-laden surf craft. The waxing starts off fast and only becomes more aggressive over time, culminating in a wild slamming of Fu on fiberglass and Ferreira running out of frame.

The caption reads: “When it’s firing and you have no patience”

A few days later, Instagram Brasil decided to honor their hero by emulating his heavy-handed waxing, deeming it the #FerreiraChallenge. Being the legend that he is, Italo has been re-posting their attempts in his IG story.

As of time of writing, there have been over 40 #FerreiraChallenge entries. We can only imagine this number will grow dramatically throughout the following days. Stab just sent its own version over to Italo, because why the hell not.

We encourage all of you to do it too. Just post an IG story of yourself doing the #FerreiraChallenge and tag @italoferreira.

Use caution though, the wax slam can be dangerous to body and board.

Separately, the waves quadrupled in size this evening on the North Shore. We’ll be sure to bring you all the hot waves and rumors from the next few days.

XOXO,

GG
