Gallery: Day Two of the Volcom Pipe Pro
All photos by Brent Bielmann (water) and Ben Reed (land) Darn peaky and darn freaky. Day two of the Volcom Pipe Pro was greeted with six to eight foot Pipe and Backdoor, looking as bulbous as ever. Throughout the day, the swell picked up rather considerably with sets capping at second reef. The lefts were vomiting themselves into the channel, while the rights left surfers stuck (Dusty Payne, in particular), taking sets on the head. Unsurprisingly, Jamie O’Brien, Dusty Payne, Ian Walsh, Mikey Bruneau, and Nathan Florence owned some of the day’s best rides. More unexpected were the performances by Ian Gouveia and Shun Murakami, each of whom threw themselves over the ledge on bomb lefts in dangerous fashion, but managed their escapes cleverly. Day three will start with one of the most anticipated heats of round three, seeing John John Florence and Bruce Irons face off against Yago Dora and Seth Moniz.
