Did Gabriel Medina Just Buckle His Knee (Too) On This Vicious Wipeout?
**Update: No, he’s totes fine!**
The Men’s CT is about one injury away from being renamed the MRI/X-ray Tour.
Last year it was Kelly Slater’s foot at J-Bay. This year it was Caio Ibelli’s foot at Bells. Even more recently this year, in fact just this past week in Bali, it was John Florence’s knee at KFC’s. And now, according to a recent Instagram post by Ryan Williams (@ryzphoto), it might just be Gabriel Medina’s knee at Uluwatu.
Let’s watch the clip:
Ryan’s caption reads: A mash up of three leg snapping punts all filmed this past week with @gabrielmedina – @john_john_florence – @jordysmith88
John is out injured due to his air in this clip, Jordy is fine, and Gabby’s was filmed yesterday, I haven’t seen him since…
Hopefully he’s ok, his knee looked like it buckeled quite hard while doing the splits on landing.
As we can see in the clip, Gabby went for his textbook alleyoop at Ulus but landed with his back foot disengaged. Rather than catching his traction pad and riding away, Gab’s left foot slipped off the back of his board while his right stayed firmly planted. Because the board maintained its forward momentum (with Gab’s front foot attached) and his back foot was left dangling off the back, Gab was forced into the splits with his front knee turning inward and collapsing under his body weight.
It doesn’t look good.
Despite the filmer’s claim that Gab has not been seen since the fall, Stab holds out hope that Gabby’s tumble was in fact non-injurious. Love him or hate him, Gabby will/would be damn fun to watch at Uluwatu tomorrow.
We’ve got feelers out across Bali and will keep you informed as new info comes to light.
9 PM PST UPDATE:
And you may expel your collective sigh of relief because Gabriel Medina is fine! We just received a photo of Gab hucking another air at Uluwatu this morning, so it seems both his knee and his subconscious are well and truly intact. Feel free to carry about your day.
