Breaking: Palm Springs’ First Official Tubes Christened By World Champ Italo Ferreira
Today, we saw the opening swell at the Palm Springs Surf Club.
The first of Palm Springs’ three proposed surf tanks is officially producing waves.
The Palm Springs Surf Club, founded by Cheyne Magnusson and Kalani Robb (among other investors), invited World Champ Italo Ferreira to christen their virgin peaks earlier this week.
With phones confiscated to all of those who entered the facility, Italo was the first high profile surfer to ride the new technology. Reports abound that Italo was doing what Italo does: making effortless full rotation air reverses, shuv-its and Supermans.
We’re yet to see footage but Stab was leaked an image, the wedging right tube which bounces off the wall after what we’re told is a very difficult take-off.
First impressions are extremely positive. The PSSC crew has created a legit-looking tube, and according to reports, they’re only operating at 50% of the tech’s capacity.
According to sources who wish to remain anonymous, what we see in the photo is just a test run of the tub’s tech, which is operating in the original Wet n’ Wild pool (the old pool’s bathymetry hasn’t been changed, they are simply demonstrating the tech’s potential in the preexisting pool). The test run will be used to secure further funding from outside investors. A proof of concept, if you will.
Part of the reason for this step is that Cheyne and Kalani are using a new wave-creation tech called Surf Loch (as created by Tom Lochtefeld), which is most comparable to American Wave Machines’ (Waco) Perfect Swell technology, out of all the existing designs, in the sense that it uses individual compression chambers to produce wave segments, which when pushed in a particular sequence create a pure wave.
Now that the PSSC crew have proven Surf Loch’s efficacy, they’ll be meeting with their investors to secure funding to double the size of their test pool and turn the fucker up to 11.
More details as they come.
