Vans Announces the Surfers & Shapers of the Duct Tape Festival, Rio de Janeiro

Known for thinking outside the fin box, the minds behind the checkerboard walls of Vans HQ continue to bust molds and bash preconceived notions of what’s allowed when it comes to surfboard design and performance.

From lobster tails and “loud” liter-age, the shapes and characters that come together under the DTF umbrella are never not interesting, and we’ve had the pleasure of documenting several such collisions of subculture.

Here’s a brief look back at some of our favorite moments from Duct Tape-shapes past.

After all, volume is just a number.
Tomas Hermes and his first-ever self-shape.
No craft is too experimental.
Cross-cultural crossover is inevitable.

Such a legacy will continue in 2023, signified by the announcement of the four shapers selected for this year’s Vans Duct Tape Surf Festival, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This year’s list includes the similarly eclectic quartet of Brazil’s own Pedro Barros and Jasmim Avelino alongside California’s Karina Rozunko and Cape Town’s Michael February.
