For the last few days, half of the world’s best surfers were either hustling to bring their flights to the Gold Coast up sooner, or already in the mix between Snapper and Kirra. The other half were competing in the Burton Automotive Pro, the marquee event at Surfest. The contest wrapped yesterday when Alejo Muniz chipped past Jack Freestone in the final.
The 6000-point event unfolded in some deplorable weather conditions, but Alejo’s day was bright: Not only did he win the contest, but he did it on his 25th birthday. “It’s my birthday today so this feels extra special,” said Alejo. “It also feels amazing because two years ago I finished second to Parko here and now I was able to win. Before the Final I wrote a message on my board to my friend Ricardo Dos Santos – he was an amazing surfer and he passed away one month ago. This is a very special day for me to dedicate this win to him.”
Jack Freestone is really getting it done of late.
