A Sequence You’ll Dig: Brad Domke Exits Cylinder’s Cannon

The Wedge’s girl next door.

Last week Southern California had some spark. Which is a bit of an overstatement but up and down the coast there were waves. Scenes from the Wedge rattled IG feeds with sub-lines of shark attacks and beach closures. New closures were instated this week when great whites were spotted off of Sunset Beach just a few miles north of the Huntington’s commercially plagued Main Beach. Now, June’s come with coastal gloom and inland flame. Ill-prepared beachgoers flock to the coast in SUV’s unloading gazebo’s, BBQ’s, jean shorts and knee-high socks – disappointment is imminent post a two hour drive out of triple digit temps east of the 5 Freeway to the chilled and overcast seaboard.

Brad Domke’s probs one of the only skimboarders you know by name… unless you follow skim. That’s because he whips into maxed out Jaws and Puerto Escondido on a disc, while his peers paddle in on rhino chasers ranging from eight-10 feet. However the gent, like most skimmers, enjoys the frills of foam and fins. “I’ve been skimboarding Wedge most of this season,” he tells Stab. “The day before this was so good for paddling. The following day it was time to change it up and bring my surfboard.”

“This was my first wave of the day,” he continues. “I’ve been frothing to surf Cylinders and it started to show its colours. I’d been watching it the day before from the sider at Wedge. Cylinders is a closed out sand slab and it gets really heavy. Every once in a while there’s a diamond in rough. It felt good to have this one open up!”

So, here’s a little reminder of how last week was for you wave deprived California folk…
