A Collection Of Sunny Garcia’s Greatest Hits (Circa 1990s)
Taylor Steele compiled Sunny’s finest moments from the “Momentum Files”.
Sunny Garcia may be the only guy in Momentum 2 that doesn’t do an air. In 1993, as Taylor Steele was ushering in the New School generation on VHS, Garcia’s powerful brand of surfing was decidedly old school—yet impressive enough to earn him a spot in the film. High-line speed runs, full-rail carves, punishing hits to any poor lip that got in his way, that’s how Garcia has always surfed since he exploded onto the scene, crushing Tom Carroll as a 14-year-old in ’84.
As the surf world collectively waits for an update on Garcia’s condition a week after news broke that he was on life support in a Portland-area hospital, Steele has dug deep into his voluminous archives to remind everyone just how good of a surfer Garcia was in his prime. From his appearance in Momentum 2 in ’93, through his world title in 2000 and beyond, Garcia was a force to reckon with throughout the ‘90s. He was the antithesis of tail slides and fin blows.
His brand of surfing is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago.
Garcia’s friends and family remain by his side in Oregon, hoping and praying for the best possible outcome. A prayer vigil was held for him on the North Shore over the weekend. Details of his condition remain vague at this time. Hopefully, we can look forward to seeing new clips of Garcia back in the water in the not too distant future.
For now, Steele’s visuals are keeping him all in our hearts and minds.
