Swatch Is Going Deep

The Swiss watch co just dropped a new collection with 10-bar water resistance.

Theory: Wearing a watch ultimately makes you spend more time in the water.

If you’ve got a hard deadline, you’ll never bail from the lineup early, fearing that you’ll miss it. And if you’ve got nothing going on, well, why surf for an hour and 38 minutes when you can push a bit harder and hit that clean two-hour mark?

There’s a reason why our species has been doing that whole horology for thousands of years.

Last year, Swatch worked with this familiar face to create the Coco Ho Blu model. But now it’s time for something new. Photo: Swatch

Swatch just dropped a new collection of watches called the Scubaqua. You’ve got five different color options, and they’re made with bio-sourced materials. Importantly, they’re 10-bar water resistant, which means they can tolerate pressure up to 100 meters deep.

In other words, more than enough to tolerate any bad decisions you make regarding wave selection and/or lineup positioning — even at, say, Jaws.

This playful take on a classic dive watch comes as Swatch reinvests in surf. They recently signed Patti Zhou. They’ve got another edition of the Swatch Nines surf event (carnival?) coming to Waco Surf next month. And they’ve got a short film in the works with Noah Beschen.

Good times, so to speak.
