Another Day Of A-Grade Pipeline
Scenes from the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout presented by Weedmaps.
As you’ve probably seen during your daily thumbscroll, the past three days at Pipeline have been quality. So with another day spent overlooking the break at the Weedmaps Pipe House, today has been more of the same. More spliffs, more tubes, more beers, a few girls, sunny skies and pristine conditions. In short: Not. A. Single. Complaint.
“It was going off today,” Bruce Irons tells Stab when asked the mundane question, “Uhh, how was Pipeline today?”
“It wasn’t perfect, easy Pipeline but there were perfect waves in the mix.”
After Bruce’s first heat, he packed a closeout at Backdoor that had the house screaming. “That thing was sick!” he says. “When I paddled into it, it looked like a five or six-foot wave, then I saw the footage and it was way bigger.
I was concentrating on my feet and making the drop and barely snuck under the lip. I set a good line and it just back drafted me. It was such a good vision, such a powerful wave.
I thought I was gonna hit the reef. And ended up shoulder first into this patch of sand. Underwater I was like Woah, there’s sound out here? Then I ended up on the reef,” he laughs.
