Ain’t it just so perfect that funny guy Sterls is actually a ripper? The dimensions are multi! This joint he’s surfing is the place to go when the swell maxes out, which it does more often that you’d think in southern California. It’s called, officially at least, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier and it’s the oldest centre for ocean research, like, in this world! “For someone who likes to do inverted tricks this place is sort of a last resort when La Jolla is bombing and looking like Sunset and Blacks and Torrey Pines look like the final Bells scene in Point Break,” says the photographer, Mr Pete Taras. “A lot of the reefs were super good this day and when I go down and shoot those I tend to only go solo because it’s incredibly difficult to get waves at ‘em if you’re not a local. So, I spent the morning shooting there and linked up with Sterling after. Sterling came incredibly close to pulling this. I think he would’ve pulled it if he hadn’t become vegan recently.” Vegans are weak! It’s true!
