Sleeping In On Vancouver Island With Pete Devries
It’s cold outside.
There’s nothing lovelier from afar than a cold water break with a flourishing backdrop. It’s beauty lies in the uninviting nature, the distant chill, effort and rubber it takes to get out off the Canadien coast. “Normally when this wave breaks, Pete Devries and I show up together at first light,” lensman Marcus Paladino tells Stab. “But my good friend Michael Darling was in back in town for the holidays, and we wanted to drive out together. The night before, the forecast claimed it would be cloudy with questionable winds in the morning, so we decided to sleep-in. When I woke up to clear skies and a promising wind direction, I knew we had blown it. We showed up at the spot and this was the first photo I shot while suiting up to swim out. When I got to the lineup, Pete said, ‘Where have you guys been? I’ve been surfing by myself for like and hour and a half.”
