Shaun Joubert, frontside hit in WA

Shaun Joubert, pictured here, is from South Africa. Mossel Bay, South Africa, to be specific. Photog Ryan Miller first met Shaun during a drive with Jordy Smith across South Africa, from J-Bay to Cape Town. Shaun’s parents happen to live halfway between the two places, so a pit-stop was made. “His parent’s place was one of the most architecturally-amazing homes I’ve ever been to,” says Ryan. “And, to top it off, his mom whipped up the best meal for all the boys that I had that whole trip.” On the other side of the world, Shaun and Ryan reconnected in West Oz, during the Telstra Drug Aware Pro, Margaret River. “I’m staying with Shaun here at the moment and it’s pure comedy,” says Ryan. “His dad is over here with him and loves to shoot photos. He has all the good gear and a massive passion for stills. But, since groms these days are all about the clips, Shaun makes his dad shoot video all day long. His dad Anton hates it but is so passionate about his son’s surfing that he sucks it up and shoots video. The banter at night while watching the clips is too funny: ‘Dad, you missed my clip’ ‘Who cares if I miss your clip, you fall on every wave. If I were shooting photos you would have had a good photo on that wave.’ ‘The framing is bad on this one.’ ‘Learn how to make a wave and I’ll get your clips.’ It is pretty cool to see such a strong father son relationship that they can take the piss out of each other all night like best friends.”
