It’s miraculous, really, how uncommon it is for surfers to sustain serious injuries as a result of doing colossal airs, like Ryan Callinan here in Newcastle yesterday. He’s been getting around a bit lately, darting all over the globe chasing the WQS, whilst simultaneously trying to amass footage for his part in Kai Neville’s new film, Cluster. So our photographer Bosko was pleasantly surprised to track him down for this brief moment of brilliance. “Ryan had been away for a while, and when he was home, I was away,” says Bosko. “We keep missing each other by a day or two. So this was our first session shooting together in a while. Ryan was really going for it, trying to get as high and as tweaked as he could. The tide was dropping and he landed on one out in the flats and hurt his shoulder. There was probably one foot of water and the sand was like concrete, but he was okay, somehow.”
