Pete Devries Shimmy Shimmy Ya, Vancouver Island
Between Canada’s bitter chill and fickle breaks, Mr Devries cuts through an icy foam ball. “This was my longest swim to date,” claims lensman Marcus Paladino, “somewhere around four and a half hours without a break. After hitting the reef for the third time, my housing started to leak. I was so frantic to get to land that I swam in at the worst possible spot, while a clean up set was approaching. I got washed across a bed of jagged rocks before I was able to get to my feet and stumble over to safety. I was shivering so hard my teeth were chattering and my hands were shaking. I still have the scar on my back and this photo of Pete Devries navigating a foam ball. I’m not 100 percent sure, but I may have blacked out while eating my pasta later… I sure don’t remember eating it.”
