Noa Deane, the ledge at Grajagan
If you cut a 10-buck piece off for last month’s issue you would’ve found a feature gifted to the filmic work of Jon Frank and Noa Deane. The pair flew to Bali, speed-boated to Grajagan, and worked over a four-to-six-foot swell. And all shot on expired film – gifted by another photographic great Ted Grambeau – from 2006, part of the same batch that forms Noa’s A Return To Old-Fashioned Values. This photo, of a wave thrown back by Noa, didn’t make Jon’s initial cut despite its obvious beauty. Why? “As the picture taker we become emotionally invested in the moment and that affects our judgement,” says Jon. “A fresh pair of eyes, someone who wasn’t invested in the making the photograph, often has a far clearer and far better eye to pick a photo.”
