Michael Spencer, air-revs at Merewether, NSW
Merewether Beach, on the east coast of Australia, is the site of Surfest, a long-running event that was, this year, anointed as a six-star. Surfest used to go down at Newcastle beach but organisers grew tired of moving the contest site to Merewether every year, so decided to make the transition permanent. Why? ‘Cause aside from its three consecutive righthand reefs, it also forms a bank in the middle of the beach that, when things come together, can be like a skatepark. Which has been the case recently. Mike Spencer, pictured here, lives close and don’t miss a beat out there. Ain’t sequences rewarding? Nothing’s left to chance!
