Jordy Smith, Whipped-in power turn around Jeffreys Bay, South Africa
“J-Bay has been flat,” says South African Jordy Smith, pictured here powering throughout the back foot. “So to keep ourselves busy, we’ve been missioning around to find some waves.” As you may already know, swell size for the Billabong Pro, J-Bay is still grim, and the forecasts don’t hold too much promise. The lack of swell’s forced some competitors with a bit of local knowledge (like Jordan) to look elsewhere for the swell magnets. Jords and his pals know that it’s always gonna be tough to get going in waist-high waves, and that the aid of a certain petrol-powered device is a sure-fire way to spice things up: “We got the red bull ski with us,” says Jordy. “So we’ve been having lots of fun doing whips in the smaller surf. It’s just good to get in the water and get the body ready for the comp.”
