Joel Parkinson, Bluetooth at Duranbah, Australia
Bluetooth? Like, hands-free! Y’may not be aware of how good Joel Parkinson’s aerial game is, since it’s a muscle he doesn’t flex too often in competition. But the Cooly kid can fly – especially at Duranbah, pictured above, a spot he’s been surfing since he was a pup. It’s only two weeks into the year, but it’s almost Gold Coast time. The area heats up from Feb to March, with the Breaka Burleigh Pro and the more glamourous Quiksilver Pro. This year also sees the addition of the Billabong World Junior Championship, starting in five days’ time, which is the second instalment of the two-part series, the first of which was held in Bali late last year. Funnily enough, Joel here won the World Junior champs in 1999 and 2001. A decade on and he still manages to place second in the world.
