Globe Imaginarium
The Transworld Surf Imaginarium was a cheeky concept – get four teams, assign each of them a different colour from the CMYK colour palette, and send them out into the wild with nought but their wit and talent. The idea was hatched and loaned from sister title, Transworld Skate’s Skate and Create concept. Globe had M for magenta, Oakley had Y for yellow and O’Neill had K, which is black. The final place was for Volcom with C for cyan but they had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances. Says Globe’s creative director, Joe G: “I actually wish they were in it because I was pretty psyched to see what they would do.” Oakley pimped out a pool with some yellow detail and a bunch of models, while Dustin Barca made the journey through hell that can be airport experiences (only to find a happy ending). O’Neill washed out the water ’till black, while their team threw enough colour to light it up. But in the end it was Globe’s treatment of magenta, or Ungu as ’tis known in Indo, that championed. The guys sourced models from Bali, bodypainted them, and used their skin as the foreground to Taj Burrow, Dion Agius, the Hobgoods and Nate Tyler going to work on a more-than-fun Balinese beachbreak. Globe’s creative director, Joe G, said this of the experience: “We took it goddam dead serious. We were in the first skate and create that TW did and almost won so i wanted to make sure we nailed it when they called us about this one.” For their troubles, Globe scored the cover of Transworld Surf. TWS now have an original, doped-out cover (plus splendid clips)… without even lifting a finger. Genius!
