Gallery: How Seabass And Pals Do The Ments

Testosterone, alcohol and too much time spent separated from society. It’s the classic Mentawai boat trip formula, and along with exceptional wave quality, usually provides half the enjoyment. Out there in the tropics, you spend the day burning your finest surf memories, return to your vessel, exaggerate then recount over a tub of suds with your pals and allow the lunacy to amplify. Throw in fireworks, a razor, 1460 cans of beer and a recent win at the Komune Bali Pro and you’ve got fire.

The squad consisted of ten surfers and three photographers, bouncing around for eight days in the islands after the QS1000 event. The cast included the event’s champ Brent Dorrington, Sebastian ‘Seabass’ Zietz, Brett Livingstone, Sheldom Simkus, Joel Nantes, Samba Mann, Nick Vasicek and Mitchell James. While quality never tipped the scales by Indonesian standards, they hugged the magnets and got their thrills (swipe that gallery above for evidence).

“The trip was put together by Lachlan McKinnon for a personal vacation with his Gold Coast mates,” Mr Zietz told Stab. “I wasn’t going to go originally, but after Bells I was going to Bali for the comp and was so stoked to be in warm water and decent waves that I decided to join. Somehow I never bought a ticket, so I made sure we had plenty of beers throughout.”

“The haircuts were more sacrificial for Robbie because he crushed his face and blew his knee out on the second and third day of the trip,” Bass explains of his DIY barbershop. “Sheldom was first and his chick still hasn’t posted a photo of him (laughs).”

And the lubricated firework episode featured on his Instagram? “We got our hands on some Indo fireworks and Water Bubbler (Brett Levingston) was setting them off one by one in an orderly fashion. So I snuck off with a four pack and threw them straight in the fire right by everybody. They didn’t go off right away so I had to walk over and poke them in with a stick. Was definitely the highlight of the trip.”

“It was a dream team,” said lensman Juan Medina. “Everyone ripping and everyone drinking hardcore (laughs). We drunk 1460 beers but in the same time everyone was up everyday at 6am for the first surf. We did so much silly shit.”
