Dane Reynolds, Snapper Rocks lip-burner, Gold Coast
Today in his round two heat at the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast, Dane Reynolds beat Adriano De Souza with this turn. Sure, there was more to it than that, but at the heart of it all was the belting you see here, not dissimilar to the one he did at Haleiwa during last year’s Reef Hawaiian Pro. So, is it his frustration turn? (Both times he’s done it competition he’s been on the ropes and struggling to get back in the game). “Kinda, it’s pretty raw, just push as far as you can in any way you can and try to ride out of it, I guess. I don’t know when I first started trying to do those, but I like those turns. It wasn’t a great wave but I was feeling the pressure because Adriano already had a nine, and I think you have to match a nine when somebody else gets one. That wave didn’t start off so good so I pushed as hard as I could off the closeout, and willed it to work.” And work it did – compiled with the nose-burying hack and swift roundhouse he did before hitting the closeout, the wave scooped him a 9.40. And that’s why the surfing world so loved Dane Reynolds.
