Matt Pallet Waltzes With An Emerald Mistress, New Pier, ZAF

“This was one of the biggest swells to hit Durban in a very long time,” says lensman, Marck Botha on the past few days of storm and surf in South Africa. Here, Matt Pallet puts on his dancing suit and waltzes with Durban’s emerald mistress, New Pier. “During the session,” continues Mr Botha. “The weather was constantly switching from rain storms to sun. The vibe was moody and eerie.” Grant “Twig” Baker (who never misses a storm at home), Mike Frew, and Davey van Zyl were amongst the standouts of the past few days. “Also, bodyboarders, Stephan du Preez and Seabass Perez were charging. Regarding size and direction, this was one of the biggest swells in years. The waves broke some of the promenade supports; it’s been relentless. We’ve had to get out of the water a kilometre down the beach and run all the way back up.”
“Twig found a couple of really clean ones, and Mike was taking all the bombs. Matt (pictured here) and Davey both found some screamers. It has been like this for three days, and it looks like there are another two days left in it.”
