For those not from Australia’s east coast, you may remember Manly from the Australian Open of Surfing, which took place for the first time back in February. The part of Manly that the contest was held is called North Steyne. At the other end of the beach, rather predictably, is South Steyne. Which is where we find north-coaster Benny Godwin, a man worlds away from the competition and wave-milking of the Aus Open, some months after the contest, at the darker end of the beach, blasting into a southerly wind on a brisk autumn afternoon.
