Portugal attracted a whole lot of surfers recently, and not just for the world tour event at Peniche. Included in the non-WCT men swirling through the country was Alex Gray, pictured here. Photographer Tom Carey was the crew’s accompanying photographer, and captured this moment at a Portuguese slab. “While the rest of the tour was surfing mediocre Supertubes we scored this psycho slab for two days straight,” says Tom. “It’s the heaviest wave ever. A good one breaks in a few feet of water, while others actually land on the shelf. Alex made everyone surfing out there that night think he was crazy. He definitely stole the show. John John (Florence) also paddled out after getting seriously hurt here a while back.”
