When Will The WSL Finals Run?
Your unofficial forecast lives here.
The WSL Finals will take place on a single day between September 9th and 17th. That makes today the first official day of the waiting period. Because the waves are more or less flat, they will not be running the event.
As far as the forecast goes, it’ll remain relatively small for the next few days. A large south swell starts to fill on Sunday, peaks Monday/Tuesday, and starts to recede on Wednesday (all times in US).
Smart money (and a voice on the inside) says they run the event on Monday, unless of course they’re trying to double-down on the Super Bowl vibes, in which case they’ll go for Sunday. Seeing as how this is also the opening Sunday of the NFL season (ironic, we know), that seems unlikely. So, probably Monday.
As a refresher, the WSL Finals will take the top five men and women from the Championship Tour’s regular season and pin them against one another in a one-day playoff event to decide our 2021 World Champions. This is how it works:
– The 5th seed surfs against the 4th seed
– The winner of that surfs against the 3rd seed
– The winner of that surfs against the 2nd seed
– The winner of that surfs against the 1st seed in a best-of-three-heats surf-off. The winner of this becomes the world champion.
Here are the men’s and women’s seeds going into the event:
Women:
1. Carissa Moore (HI)
2. Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA)
3. Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS)
4. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
5. Johanne Defay (FRA)
Men:
1. Gabriel Medina (BRA)
2. Italo Ferreira (BRA)
3. Filipe Toledo (BRA)
4. Conner Coffin (USA)
5. Morgab Cibilic
