It started in the dark with a bold paddle-out strategy. It ended in the dark with exhaustion.

With time winding down in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing window, competitors have been putting it all on the line for their shot at stealing the crown from John John Florence and Carissa Moore. Sometimes they’ve been pushed into battle at more than one location in a single day to capitalize on swell, wind, conditions, and crowd factor. But until this moment, we hadn’t heard of any surfers attempting to secure scores at all three waves in a single day (at least this year).

Enter Harry Bryant and Micky Clarke. As sand continued to drip through the hourglass, we lent a hand, and a ride, to the visiting surfers as they attempted to secure scores at Pipeline, Sunset, and Haleiwa on a day that was busting at the seams with swell. Nathan Fletcher offered his caddie skills and expert opinion to boot.

Was the juice worth the squeeze? As you’ll come to see, catching waves at Pipeline, Sunset, and Haleiwa takes a lot of work. So don’t beat yourself up next time you paddle out and come back with one wave beneath the belt.

This is a section from The Pick-Up, a Vans and Stab weekly news show keeping you current on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and other happenings around the North Shore. Watch all of Episode 5 here.
