Less Stickers, More Relatable
Nothin’ like a few triple barrels at ruler-edged Kirra
We enjoy watching Ando or Clay Marzo wiggle and twist their way through unmakeable sections as much as the next guy. But, there’s something undeniably relatable about watching an everyday bloke hurtle through a Kirra vortex while perched atop a stickerless steed.
Fortunately, one of the surf-media trends of the past few years has been an influx in raw footage of pumping waves all around the world. At some point, creators realized that people enjoy watching unedited clips that reveal a more realistic perspective on certain wave-rich locales. Less work, more integrity?
No music, no pretenses, just the ocean, the wind, and whoever happens to be getting waves in a lineup on any given day. (We’re gonna credit Surfers of Bali with starting this trend, but feel free to correct us in the comments.)
No longer do the stickered-up pros — and fifth graders who surf better than most of us — monopolize the interwebs. Now you can see average Joes, with just as many stickers as you, making their mark on pumping days all around the world.
This particular day happens to be Kirra at its most enticing. Oh, the siren song of crystalline cones.
Admittedly, in the above edit, there are a few sponsored guys handling business, but the civilian surfing contingent get their share of backless funnels (see: Backhand Billy @1:11).
Also, the waves in this video are damn ridiculous. The word “perfection” is maybe a touch played out, but it’s swirling in our cerebral-matter upon ingestion.
Maybe “fucking pumping” would be better?
