Is There A Better Use For Your Old Sled Than Surfers Not Street Children?
Probably not. From OC to South Africa, everybody loves surfboards.
Remember that board drive we did during the Oceanside premiere of DNA: The Colapinto Brothers in June?
Not only was the night fun and the flick a hit, the event contributed to a worthwhile cause — giving surfboards to kids in South Africa. A bunch of viewers brought a lot of foam for Surfers Not Street Children. And through a partnership with Oakley, those boards have now made their way to more than 130 kids in the South African program.
Rather than getting our old board under the feet of someone trying to make a few heats and be the next great South African powerhouse, this organization is doing so much more. It’s about breaking a vicious cycle of poverty and putting a smile on people’s faces.
“Kids in our program have gone on to do incredible things,” says Tom Hewitt, CEO of SNSC. “And that’s really important part of this. We want to prepare the kids for being self-sustainable. The kid that makes it out of the street and turns their life around and does an ordinary job, well that’s an extraordinary story and something they can be super proud of.”
