Is JJF Becoming A…*Gasps*… Surf Vlogger?
Two new videos on how to test boards and “fall with style” with Professor Florence.
John John Florence has gifted the planet four fancy videos in the past two weeks.
The goateed grandmaster is making a Messi-esque case for your 30s being your real “peak”. This prolific output comes right after the release of “Gravity” — the full-length film that was recently featured on Stab Premium. The quantity and quality of this — dare we say — “content” drives the question: is JJF starting a sort of… vlog? A vlog with mostly surf clips and not titled in all caps — but a vlog nonetheless.
The first of the two latest videos to drop, “A day of board testing” is interesting in two ways, the first being a phone call between John and a Pyzel employee that gives us a sense of how the sausage gets shaped. John and Pyzel label boards alphabetically and John proceeds to test ride each one with an identical fin system, giving feedback a lá Stab In The Dark — albeit with logos.
The second reason the video peaked our interest? It’s relation to the First Lesson of any Skateboard Camp for kids — how to fall. What skaters lack in helmet-wearing they make up for in a highly trained eject button. Pay attention to John’s ability to dismount gracefully, at just the right time. Injuries are perhaps the best teacher. This insight into John’s feline instincts are also seen this video, released just an hour ago:
This video is 70% falls, 30% makes. Still good in baseball terms, but distinct from John’s other edits. The clip features John and some familiar North Shore faces leaping off of sucky (in a good way) ledges. We’ve seen the Sandbar antics before, but it’s always fun and frightening and freakish, so it’s worth sneaking a peek at this year’s sandy sequel.
It’s also good curriculum for someone trying to understand how the world’s best fall inside of the tube. Kelly Slater once said that bodysurfing is the best way to learn how to fall into the abyss. John and amigos end up involuntarily bodysurfing and giving us mortals a free (minus the YouTube ads) clinic.
