Dramatic Rescue of Stranded Surfer Caught On Camera
Trouble off of Auckland’s West Coast.
On Wednesday, New Zealand Police released a video of a male surfer being rescued off rocks at the notoriously dangerous Muriwai Beach. The video was taken by the Eagle copter, which flies above all of the rescue missions in case the lifeguards themselves end up in trouble.

For this particular rescue, Gowthorpe said he and another lifeguard made their way across the water to where the surfer was on the rocks.
He had been stuck on the rocks for about two hours and was cold, Gowthorpe said.
A police spokesperson added “Just because it is winter does not mean our beaches and coastlines are any less dangerous.
“Drownings unfortunately can occur in any month at our beaches – in the past decade around half of the drownings were not during summer.”
