Dior Shreds
Is this the elevation or denigration of modern surf aesthetics?
A few days ago, Dior Men’s Resort 2023 collection took over Venice and effectively idealized surf culture. Windward Avenue was painted blue and molded into a 30-foot fabric wave platform for Eli Russel Linnez’s “California Couture Collection.
The designer’s interpretation of the “skate-rat-surf-hippie vibe” was conveyed via oversized shorts, fat sneakers, pearl embroidery, and cashmere straight from the goats’ buttocks. A spectacular contrast to boardshorts, thongs, and ratted tees, typically associated with “surfwear”.
Noteworthy visitors included: Michael B. Jordan, Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz-Beckham, Kid Cudi, and Rita Ora. Tony Hawk, outlier — sporting Dior logo sweatshirt — sat between Christina Ricci and Christina Aguilera. He told Vogue, “I love how they were going with the semi-formal look with the suits, but making them real light casual.”
Couture skate might be Tony Hawk’s next thing. However, cashmere will remain amiss from our list of surf essentials in SoCal, at least for the time being.
