Can You Guess Which Snapt4 Section Got New Tunes?
426,000 views, gone with the wind!
Four-hundred-twenty-six thousand views.
That’s nearly half a million people who watched Snapt4 since it was first released on Youtube three months ago. But if you check the view counter today, it’s down below 1,000. How can that be?
When compiling the 50-minute surf fiasco that would earn second-best-surf-film-of-the-year in our 2021 poll, director Logan Dulien said to hell with music rights, we’re doing it old school.
Songs from Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, and more comprised the score, which got the crowds on their feet at each and every film premiere. However when you upload these songs to Youtube, you run the risk of a band saying that they don’t approve of the use, which can result in a “strike” against your account or, in a worst case scenario, the video being pulled down for eternity.
In Snapt4’s situation, it wasn’t that they were specifically flagged by an artist, but rather that the artist wanted its music off Youtube’s platform altogether. Youtube complied with the band’s request, meaning that any video using the artist’s music was given an option: either mute that section of the video, or take it down altogether.
“I couldn’t imagine having a completely silent section in the film,” Logan Dulien said, when we asked about his decision to pull the original film down, re-edit with a new song, and upload again to Youtube. “So we bit the bullet, sacrificed the half-million views, and started from scratch.”
Logan hopes that over time, the video will work its way back to the half-million mark or beyond. To help the Snapt4 crew on their quest, we figured we’d give our readers a challenge: can you pinpoint which section had a song change?
Drop your guesses below.
Hint: It’s actually the same song as before, but a live version.
