Breaking: Mikey Wright Announces His Departure From The World Tour
Professional surfing’s work from home movement gains another member.
Following his first heat at the Corona Open Mexico, Mikey Wright announced that he is taking a break from the World Tour once the event ends.
Minus a few ‘You know’s, the man with the shaved sides said, “I’m going back to free surfing, making videos, and putting out stuff that I like. I qualified for the tour pretty quickly so I never had the time to think, ‘Do I want to be here?’”
Truth be told, I never saw Mikey Wright as a good fit for the tour. I always imagined he’d be more successful running a hybrid surfing/fishing YouTube channel. A couple of monetized videos, a gritty catchphrase, and some drop-shipped merchandise is all it takes to keep collecting checks off tour.
As the currently ranked 33rd surfer in the world, you can’t fire Mr. Wright, because he quits.
