A Surf Book 2x The Size Of ‘The Encyclopedia Of Surfing’
David Matuszak’s ‘San Onofre: Memories of a Legendary Surfing Beach’
David Matuszak is an absolute beast.
Coming from a guy who writes about surfing daily, the idea that one could concoct a 1500+ page historical account of surfing as a whole is dumbfounding. The fact that Mr. Matuszak did so about a single spot goes to show that when it comes to the surf history, we’re all playing checkers while David is playing 400 concurrent games of chess.
San Onofre: Memories of a Legendary Surfing Beach takes a look at one of Southern California’s most prolific surf breaks. While many remember the days of Camp Pendleton and the stories of surfers circumnavigating officers to catch a wave, this book goes back waaaaaaaaay further than that, chronicling the spot’s evolution starting with the “Playanos” Native Americans and the Spanish colonization of California.
If you’ve seen the Encyclopedia of Surfing, this book is literally 2x the size. For anyone who’s ever been to San’O and slid down one of its excessively mushy faces, we highly recommend checking out this book, just make sure you have a sturdy shelving unit in place before you do…
