According to recent reports, 1.81 trillion photos are taken worldwide every year, which equates to more than 57,000 per second or 5 billion per day.

Not not a lot.

Rob and his piercing blue lasers.

The saturation of imagery thanks to everyone having access to sleek smartphones and social media does no one a bigger disservice than pro photographers, who frequently have their grass cut by hobbyists swinging SLRs.

Occasionally however, you come across a body of work that stops you in your tracks. Such is the case with the selection of photos Brazilian photographer Vava Ribeiro sent to us, some of which will be on display at the Jones Surfboard Factory in Waialua this Sat 17th.

Per the press release:

North Shore, a photography book by Vava Ribeiro, represents some of his most compelling images, centered on the place that gives the book its title: North Shore, often described as the surf capital of the world.

Published in 2019, the book began its global tour in NYC  Following an unforeseen pause caused by the 2020 pandemic, the book is now set to have its inaugural curated exhibition in Hawaii. This marks a long-awaited opportunity for the local community to experience firsthand the visual narrative of the series, bringing the essence of the book back to its roots on Hawaii’s North Shore.

The installation, taking place at Jones Surfboard Factory, will feature selected works from the book, including never-before-seen images of legendary former surfers and local figures. The event promises a poignant tribute to those who have left an enduring impact on the surfing community and aims to commemorate the rich heritage of surfing with a curated display of intimate images. Attendees will have an exclusive chance to acquire the final copies of the book, as well as selected c-prints made by the artist.
