A Reminder That Lance’s Right Doesn’t Need A Purple Blob To Create Perfection
One week’s worth of sharp Sipura orbs, scavenged by a few fortunate teenagers and distilled into 17-enchanting minutes.
Have you ever looked at the geographic orientation of Lance’s Right in relation to its predominant swell source?
The fabled shelf, which manages to turn southwest swells into bona-fide perfection, faces precisely due northeast — sometimes bending swell over 180 degrees.
Ask any Lance’s regular, and they’ll tell you the best swells out there are the ones with as much west as possible in them, adding to the hydrologists head trip.
“The clip is from a week we did there in January,” says Kalani “KK” Ryan, one of our Stab High interns and Dylan Wilcoxen’s perennial accomplice. “There was a little west swell coming and we kinda just striked it. We ended up surfing every day. “
Looking back through Surfline’s historical data, the swell KK is referring to was little more than 5-feet at its peak — meaning it nearly magnified in size as it wrapped around Sipura’s southernmost headland.
Strange.
Though we had little intention of watching an entire 17-minute grom clip, we had a veritably difficult time peeling ourselves away from the enviable visions and playful approach of KK and Dylan..
Suppose it can be partially blamed on Dylan’s sit-down-tubes…
“He kinda does that a lot,” laughs Kalani. “I’ve tried it before. I didn’t succeed at all. Just went over the falls. He’s a master.”
