“What did they give Jordy for that last wave?” Bede Durbidge asked after Jordy Smith spun a full-roter at the Billabong Pro, J-Bay. “A 9.47,” came the reply. “They should’ve given him a 10!” said Bede.

After the most consecutive lay-days in ASP history, Ryan Miller understatedly described today and its 20 heats as “a long one”. Rounds three, four and five were all run, with event organisers eager to make it through to the quarters. Only one day remains in the waiting period, and that day is tomorrow.

Ryan also gave us a brief breakdown of Jordy’s day: “His first heat against (Travis) Logie looked amazing and too easy. He broke his magic board from last year’s win right at the end, but didn’t even need the time to make it back it out again. In his second heat, the wheels came off – Ace went wild on his backhand and Jordy struggled to find even one scoring wave. The magic came back to the boy in his third heat of the day against Bede, when he found his footing again. Jordy is now the front runner for the Nixon highest heat score watch.
